One of the key elements in decorating your home is personality – your personality. The best rooms, including the ones you see in all of the home magazines, are those that offer a glimpse into the person who lives in them. It could be the inclusion of some family photos or heirlooms, a souvenir picked up during a favourite holiday or something you’ve just always wanted.
But sometimes, that one item you know would be perfect for your room, isn’t easy to find. Don’t let this put you off – when you do find what you want, it will be worth the wait.
This is an antique globe light that sits proudly in my home. For almost two years, my husband looked high and low for just the right one. Inspired by the album cover of Coldplay’s debut album Parachutes, he wanted a genuine antique globe that could be illuminated at night. We rummaged through antique stores, junk yards, online auctions, you name it. Eventually, he found it on eBay from a seller in the US. Circa 1940’s the globe features now defunct countries such a Rhodesia, the USSR and Yugoslavia. Thankfully it arrived in one piece and we had the electrics converted to Australian standards by an antiques restorer in Armadale.
As well as looking right at home on our buffet unit, it’s also a great talking point whenever we have visitors.
Including pieces like this when you decorate is what turns your house into a home.
